Do you remember the days when you traveled as a couple? ….. I do
We would check our work schedules each month and try to align a cluster of days together. This would sometimes be difficult for a teacher and a pilot working very different hours. But we made it work the best we could.
We would book a flight the night before.. throw some bikini’s into a suitcase and less than 10hrs later we were somewhere amazing! We wouldn’t even have checked-in luggage.. We’d jump on a flight with carry-on with not a care in the world. We went to FIJI, BALI, NEW ZEALAND and HAWAII like this…… Any place that was preferably tropical and under 10 hours to get to. We would be on Standby tickets, check the passenger loads and go to the airport in the hope we’d get on. Apart from the stress of not getting on, life was so easy and carefree…. (I did get stuck in Hawaii once… but that’s a story for another time) We’d return to work on a Monday and people would ask us how our weekend was. I’d respond with.. “Yeah it was ok.. I went to Bali” The look on their face was priceless. We lived like this for 5 years. Traveling on a whim.. booking accommodation as the flight was preparing for take-off. It was adventurous, fun and carefree..
Sigh….. Now it’s forward planning and meticulous organising (which I’m hopeless at) It’s sight seeing around feeding times. It’s checked-in luggage, nappies, pram, formula, bottles, porta cots, car seats, carriers, baby food… the list is endless. I miss the good old travel days of pre Passport Baby… but I wouldn’t have it any other way now of course!
I will occasionally reminisce and write about our travels before The Passport Baby… but for now I hope you enjoy following us on our travel journey as a (pretty unorganised) little family.
I hope you enjoy our little family adventures..

I say spontaneity is the spice of life (or should that be variety is the spice of life!) Anyway I think spontaneous trips and weekend getaways are much more fun than planned trips. But as you say it is so much easier to do without a bub in tow. We did lots of camping trips when our kids were little to places like Moreton Island, North Straddie, Lennox Heads, Byron Bay, Yamba and the Tweed Coast. So having children should never stop you from travelling. You just have to make small adjustments. 🙂

Yes! Couldn’t agree more. Can’t wait to go on camping trips. We have done a campervan trip down south and it was very fun. The Passport Baby was only very little though… so he slept the whole time. ha ha
